5 Dos and Don’ts of Summer Makeup

After months of bundling up in layers upon layers of scarves, sweaters, and coats, I think I speak for everyone when I say the arrival of summer is long overdue. As temperatures skyrocket and the sun stays out for just a little bit longer each day, it’s hard not to get excited about the endless possibilities the summer season offers us. As we all know, though, the thrill of summer weather can quickly die down, especially when the high temperatures and sunny days occasionally throw our daily beauty routines a curveball. Follow these beauty dos and don’ts of summer makeup so you can put the freshest face forward this summer!

5 Dos and Don'ts of Summer Makeup

Do: Keep it Light

It’s time to admit it, ladies: yes, we all sweat. Remember this little fact when you’re creating your summer beauty look, so you can weatherproof your makeup. Keep the concealer light, and maybe even switch out a heavier foundation for a tinted moisturizer. Tinted moisturizers will still even out your skin tone, but tend to be much lighter and will not melt off your face in the heat. Use a waterproof mascara as well to keep your face streak-free!

Don’t: Wear Makeup to the Beach

For many of us, it’s hard to go anywhere without applying makeup — it almost feels like going out in public naked! Trust me, though, the beach is not the place for a fully made-up face. Between jumping in the water and sweating in the sun, your makeup will absolutely not last no matter what you do. If you absolutely cannot flaunt a natural face, keep it simple with tinted moisturizer (with SPF!), waterproof mascara, and lip gloss.

Do: Use Sunscreen

Sunscreen is your number one must-have beauty product during the summer months. With all we now know about skin cancer and the frequency of melanoma, especially in young women, you should always be wearing some kind of SPF. Whether hiking, biking, laying out on the beach, or just going through your day-to-day routine, use a foundation/tinted moisturizer and lip balm with SPF to keep yourself safe from the sun’s harmful rays. Bonus: SPF also prevents your skin from signs of aging, so slather it on to keep those wrinkles at bay!

Don’t: Freak About Humidity

Humidity is every girl’s worst enemy. We can spend hours coiffing our hair to perfection, for it only to be ruined in about 5 minutes by a wave of humid air. This summer, don’t stress about how your hair is able to keep up in the moisture. Try rocking your naturally curly, voluminous hair, but if it gets to be too much, look at some anti-frizz products such as John Frieda Frizz-Ease or Bumble and Bumble Defrizz to keep crazy hair under control.

Do: Have a Little Fun

Summer means vacations, barbecues, and music fests, and these events are perfect for having a little bit of fun with your makeup. Try bright colored eyeshadows or eyeliners (either or…not both!) to add a little fun and drama to your look. If you are naturally pale, experiment with some bronzers or even self-tanning lotion to give yourself a little extra glow. Try something new and different to find out what works for you!
